In a fresh All-Star Game format occurring on Sunday (Feb. 16) at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry guided Team OG to a thrilling victory, securing his second Kobe Bryant All-Star Game MVP award.
Performing in front of his home fans, Curry scored 12 points in Team OG’s 41-25 triumph over Team Global Stars. Team OG was coached by Kenny Atkinson from Cleveland, while Shaquille OβNeal served as their general manager. Team Global Stars was led by coaches Mark Daigneault and general manager Charles Barkley.
Jayson Tatum, star of the Boston Celtics, capped off the game with a dunk, finalizing the target score and raising his total to 15 points.
Post-game, Curry reflected on his awe-inspiring shooting performance.
βIt was one of those little flurries, just having fun,β Curry remarked. βThe half-court shot, I was planning to take one at some point. [Nikola] Jokic was defending me at half court, which was hilarious.β
He also mentioned that the new format represented positive progress, particularly given the criticism surrounding the competitionβs lack of intensity in recent years.
βI believe it was a significant step forward to rejuvenate the game in some way,β Curry said. This year’s format split the 12 Eastern and 12 Western Conference All-Stars into teams of eight, competing against a fourth team of eight first- and second-year players who triumphed in the Rising Stars game on Friday night.
The hosting experience was incredible,β Curry expressed regarding the Warriors’ hosting of the All-Star events in both Oakland and San Francisco. βI wonβt complain about feeling tired or worn out. This is a privilege and a blessing to celebrate and share this beautiful Bay Area that has been part of my life for the past 16 years, along with the basketball history and culture here, and the amazing fans, plus the significance that bringing the game here has had on both cities.β
During All-Star Saturday, Mac McClung made headlines by clinching his third consecutive Slam Dunk Contest. Each of his dunks scored a perfect 50. Tyler Herro took home the trophy in the 3-Point Contest, ending Damian Lillard’s hopes for a three-peat.
Amid a busy weekend for Curry, the Curry Brand marked its 20th court refurbishment at McClymonds High School in Oakland, CA, the alma mater of NBA legend Bill Russell. The Curry Brand has upgraded 20 courts, trained 15,000 coaches, and supported 125 programs, reaching a total of 300,000 children worldwide.
