Snoop Dogg is under significant fire after his performance at a Donald Trump inauguration celebration, resulting in a substantial drop in his social media following. As reported by the New York Post, the rap icon has lost 571,800 Instagram followers since taking the stage at the Crypto Ball on January 17th, where fellow artists Rick Ross and Soulja Boy also performed. On X (formerly Twitter), his follower tally fell by almost 20,000.
Despite this decrease, Snoop maintains an enormous fan base, with over 88 million followers on Instagram and more than 20 million on X. Nonetheless, his participation in the pro-Trump event and photos taken with MAGA supporters and far-right figures have ignited a backlash. Criticism has come from various quarters, including a former staff member of Barack Obama, who highlighted Snoop’s perceived hypocrisy after he had previously condemned Black artists for performing at Trump’s 2017 inauguration. The ex-Obama aide posted on X: “Who would have thought that Snoop Dogg would turn out to be one of the ‘Uncle Tom ass n-ggers’ he himself criticized not too long ago? What a fucking sellout.”
Snoop, now 53, has confronted the backlash directly. In an Instagram video, he responded to the criticism with, “Y’all can’t hate enough me for me, I love too much. Get your life right, stop worrying about mine. I’m cool, I’m together. Still a Black man. Still a hundred percent Black. I ain’t going nowhere, cuh!”
He also advocated for solidarity among Black individuals, encouraging them to support one another rather than tear each other apart. “I’m a strong Black man, I’m cut from a different cloth. You can’t tear me down. I’m one of God’s children, and I’m taking the load,” he asserted.
Although Snoop was an outspoken critic of Trump initially, his perspective shifted following Trump’s pardon of Death Row co-founder Michael “Harry O” Harris in 2021. In reflection, Snoop shared with The Sunday Times: “Donald Trump? He ain’t done nothing wrong to me… He pardoned Michael Harris. So I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.”
