The ongoing situation in South Beach has taken a turn as the Miami Heat have declared that Jimmy Butler is suspended indefinitely. This suspension marks the third occasion in recent weeks that Butler has faced disciplinary action from the team.
Shams Charania of ESPN reported that the suspension was implemented due to Butler walking out of shootaround on Monday, January 17. It will extend for at least five games, lasting through the NBAโs trade deadline set for February 6.
Following multiple infractions since he requested a trade, sources indicate that Haywood Highsmith will replace Butler in the starting lineup beginning with Mondayโs game against Orlando.
The Heat issued a statement confirming Butlerโs suspension.
โThe suspension results from a recurring pattern of disregard for team rules, engaging in conduct harmful to the team, and intentionally withholding services,โ the statement from Miami noted. โThis includes walking out of practice earlier today.โ
Coach Erik Spoelstra remarked that despite Butlerโs disruptive behavior, he intends to keep his team focused on their upcoming game against the Magic.
โWe didnโt discuss anything today except for our preparations for the Magic. โฆ Our concentration is solely on the present task,โ Spoelstra stated. โThereโs no better place to be than in the present moment.โ
On January 23, the Heat suspended Butler for an additional two games for missing a team flight.
โWe have suspended Jimmy Butler for two games due to a continued disregard for team rules, insubordination, and conduct detrimental to the team, including missing todayโs flight to Milwaukee,โ the team articulated at that time.
Prior to this, Butler had already been suspended for seven games for โconduct detrimental to the team, both throughout the season and especially in recent weeks.โ
Despite having missed nine of Miamiโs last twelve games, Butler was anticipated to be available for the matchup against the Magic.
Due to the recent suspension, Butler stands to lose as much as $532,737 for each game he is sidelined.
