DJ Unk, an influential figure in the Southern hip-hop genre and a pioneer of snap music, has sadly passed away, TMZ reports. He was just 43.
His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, confirmed the news on Facebook.

Born on November 28, 1982, in Atlanta as Anthony Leonard Platt, he began his musical journey in the late 1990s. He co-founded the Southern Style DJs alongside DJ Montay and DJ Jelly, a group celebrated for hosting parties across Georgia. Unk and Montay eventually secured a record deal with Big Oomp Records in 2000.
In 2006, DJ Unk dropped Beatβn Down Yo Block!, gaining national attention with his hit single, βWalk It Out,β which climbed to number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. His subsequent track, β2 Stepβ, also charted and achieved gold certification.
His second album, 2econd Season, further established him as a key innovator within the snap music genre.
In 2009, DJ Unk began facing unknown health challenges that impacted his music career. Nevertheless, he released additional singles and earned a feature in the 2K Sports NBA 2K9 video game.
Recognized for his catchy beats and vibrant live shows, DJ Unk became one of the standout voices of the Atlanta music landscape. His influence on hip-hop garnered him international acclaim.
