Pretty Vee is a multi-talented force to be reckoned with. A social media icon boasting millions of followers, this Miami native is a comedian, an emerging actress, and a thriving entrepreneur. She gained fame for her side-splitting content creation, which ultimately led to her role on Nick Cannonโs Wild โN Out. Additionally, she has successfully launched Pretty Vee Electronics and Pretty Vee Beauty, her very own line of electronics and beauty products in collaboration with Citi Trends.
In her most recent endeavor, Pretty Vee has penned her debut book, The Pretty Victory: 100-Day Guide to Recenter Yourself and Find Your Purpose. This book is characterized as โa guided journal designed to help you pinpoint your goals, discover the strength to achieve them, and unapologetically pursue your dreams.โ
HOT97 caught up with Pretty Vee to discuss her journey in writing her first book, what sparks her creativity, and how she embodies Black history every single day.
How did attending an HBCU shape your perspective?
Pretty Vee: I attended an HBCU in North Carolina, and I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities and lessons it provided. The education I received has been instrumental in my journey. Transitioning from Miami to North Carolina was certainly a significant change, but it was impactful.
When did you realize you wanted to become an entertainer?
Pretty Vee: Iโve always had a passion for the entertainment field. I dreamed of being on the radio like Angie Martinez, Ludacris, and Wendy Williams. However, God had different plans for me, leading me in front of the camera instead. There was never any other career I desired, as my love for entertaining people and making them laugh has always been my true calling.
After establishing yourself on social media, how did you secure a spot on Wild โn Out?
Pretty Vee: I may have fibbed a bit to land a spot on Wild โn Out [Laughs]. I claimed, โOh, Iโm DC Young Flyโs cousin, and Iโm Chico Beanโs auntie.โ I was determined to get on the show, so I slid into their DMs, and they reached out via email. They were already fans of my content! Unfortunately, my audition didnโt go as planned, and I didnโt get in during the first round. It felt like I had been deceitful to get on the show. However, sometimes God takes the time to guide you, allowing you to refine your craft, creativity, confidence, and self-awareness. A year later, I finally joined the cast, and Iโve been a part of it for a decade now.
Alongside all your achievements, youโre very open about your faith. When did you become seriously committed to it?
Pretty Vee: Prior to my entry into the entertainment industry, I struggled with feelings of depression and anxiety. Back in middle school, my mom prophesied that I would become an artist. I envisioned myself as a painter or drama talent, but deep down, I always wanted to be in entertainment. However, God had greater plans for me and needed me to know Him first before granting my desires. He wanted all the credit and glory for the blessings that would come. So, in 2016, I found myself in a quieter place that allowed me to discover my faith. It was during this time that my career truly began to flourish in Charlotte.
What motivated you to write โThe Pretty Victory?โ
Pretty Vee: My mother was my biggest inspiration. As a pastor, she provided unwavering support during my battle with depression. I was heavily involved in so many activities in college and putting myself out there so much, but when the same energy didnโt reciprocate after graduation, it left me feeling lost and depressed. My mother reminded me of Godโs promise that I was destined to be an artist, which motivated me to write this book.
How did you approach writing the book, and what were some insights you gained about yourself in the process?
Pretty Vee: The process was lengthy, but it was a monumental experience for me. My publishers took a risk on me, and I also took a leap of faith for myself. I was thrilled to embark on the writing journey, although it was challenging at times, especially with everything else going on. Yet, I am incredibly thankful for the entire experience.
What do you hope readers will gain from your book?
Pretty Vee: I want them to understand that they are capable of achieving victory. The 100-day devotional is designed to help one reset, define their purpose, find inspiration, and be uplifted by my insights. I empathize with the struggles of depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and nervousness. But I persevered, and I know many others, like me, are determined not to give up. This book serves as a motivational tool to encourage them. In it, I’ve included uplifting contributions from my โVictorious Friendsโ such as Dwyane Wade, Shaquille OโNeal, Issa Rae, B. Simone, and Kierra Sheard.
Finally, how does it feel to launch this book during Black History Month?
Pretty Vee: Regarding Black History, I believe we create history daily, not just in February. This belief is central to my mission. Through my endeavors in business, writing, and comedy, I aim to honor God while continuously making Black history.
