Stephen A. Smith is facing significant backlash after his remarks regarding Serena Williams‘ surprise appearance during Kendrick Lamar‘s Super Bowl Halftime Show.

On Tuesday, the sports commentator took to X to address a user’s comment, which stated, “A 57-year-old UNMARRIED man with a receding hairline who has never BEEN married mind you, saying he would divorce our greatest living athlete who has been happily married for 8 years to her very rich and loving husband—keep quiet forehead.” In response, Smith remarked, “Please go back and look at exactly what I said. I was speaking broadly from a man’s viewpoint — emphasizing what most men might think. I didn’t say anything disrespectful about Serena.” He added, “No problem with people being upset over serious matters. This doesn’t qualify as one. Come on. We were just joking around on @FirstTake. Damn, y’all! It’s not that deep.”

Smith Responds to Serena’s ‘Trolling’ Moments, Revisiting the Drake-Ohanian Feud

On Monday, Smith shared his views on ESPN’s First Take, just a day after Serena shocked audiences with her appearance and Crip walking to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track directed at Drake, “Not Like Us.” Smith stated, “If I’m married and my wife decides to troll her ex, I would say, go back to him. It’s clear you don’t belong with me. Why are you bothered by him when you’re with me? Bye. Bye.”

Years back, rumors circulated about a relationship between Drake and Serena. Last summer, he revealed that his 2016 track “Too Good” featuring Rihanna was inspired by Williams. Not long after the album dropped, in 2017, the tennis star married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and they welcomed their first child later that year. The rivalry between Drake and Ohanian has been ongoing for years. In 2022, after Drake labeled Ohanian a “groupie” in his track “Middle of the Ocean” from Her Loss, Ohanian quickly responded on X.

During last summer’s “Pop-Out: Ken and Friends” concert, Kendrick set the scene for Ohanian to take a jab at Drake. Following a video of K.Dot playing “Not Like Us,” Ohanian quote-tweeted it, pairing it with a viral clip of Kobe Bryant making a biting remark. “I’m going to beat you,” Smith expressed. “I’m going to make it clear that I’ve beaten you. And I’m going to want you to rethink your professional life choices.”
