Drake recently connected with fans in Australia, revealing the deeply personal inspiration behind his generous gifts during concerts. While performing in Melbourne on his Anita Max Win Tour, he shared a poignant narrative that reshaped his perspective on live performances. The Toronto artist disclosed that a tragedy following his 2024 concert in St. Louis profoundly affected him.
Prior to recounting the tragic event, he addressed the audience with a solemn reminder. βI donβt know if you realize it, but tonight, there are 15,000 of us here in Melbourneβall together, all celebrating, all enjoying ourselves,β he mentioned. βBut please, be mindful of your surroundings.β
The performer then described Laticha Bracero and Alyssa Cordova, a mother and daughter tragically killed by a driver after leaving his St. Louis performance. He had not previously shared this story but felt compelled to do so. βThereβs a reason I do this,β he articulated. βThereβs a reason I give away money and gifts during my shows. I hope that by sharing this story, it resonates with you.β
He reflected on how Bracero and Cordova had attended the concert seeking joy. βThey had an incredible night,β he recalled. βAnd just as they were leaving, crossing the street outside the arena, a drunk driver hit them. They both lost their lives. It shattered me. It truly messed with my head to understand that we could go from joy to devastation so quickly.β
The ordeal, he remarked, heightened his awareness of the significance of connection. βEven though we are all gathered here tonight, you never truly know what someone beside you might be enduring,β he told the audience. βOne might be smiling, perhaps enjoying a drink, having a blastβbut within, they could be carrying a heavy burden. Maybe theyβre stuck in a bad relationship. Maybe their friends are betraying them. Perhaps theyβre facing family issues.β
The individual responsible, 22-year-old Monte Henderson, faced charges of two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of armed criminal action. He was granted bond the following day after his arrest, inciting public outrage.
Graphic video footage of the incident circulated online, capturing Hendersonβs Jeep racing through a red light at over 70 mph, colliding with another vehicle and fatally injuring Bracero and Cordova. Court filings indicated his vehicle continued its trajectory until it hit a second car.
Henderson, with no previous felony record, later characterized the crash as a tragic accident through his representative.
